XXVI World Spearfishing Championship!
Welcome to the fifth issue of The Spearing Chronicle brought to you by XtremeSpearfishing.com!
 Isla de Margarita, Venezuela - The competitors have begun showing up for the 2008 CMAS World Freedive Spearfishing Championship. Elite spearfishermen from France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Ukraine, and the United States of America arrived over the past few weeks and have been actively scouting the local waters on a constant basis. Teams from Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Finland, and Peru are expected this week. In total there will be 22 countries competing at this years competition.
The reports received to date have been of clear water, moderate currents, and great weather. It appears that some less favorable weather is in the forecast, so the next couple scouting days may be a little tougher.
The World Spearfishing Championships have been taking place for the last 50 years at various locations around the world. Every two years teams from around the world meet for this 2 day tournament to determine which country can lay claim to the title of "The World's Best Divers". The determination comes through the use of points. Points are issued per fish and per pound with the results being the cumulative amount of both. The Individual Champion is determined by that diver's sole catch and the Team Champions are determined by the team's combined catch. This years tournament officially takes place on October 23rd and 24th.
Schedule of Events:
- Opening Ceremonies - Tuesday, October 21st
- First Day of Competition & Weigh In - Friday, October 24th @ 5:30 PM
- Second (Final) Day of Competition, Weigh In, & Award Ceremonies - Saturday, October 25th @ 5:30 PM
Departures and arrivals of boats will be at Playa El Tirano, Municipio Antolin Del Campo from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM both days.

New Video Tuesdays
In September we checked out Victor Abellan hunting off the coast of Spain in Victor Abellan - Pez Limon - Spain, and then headed back over to Costa Rica for some more Cubera action in Costa Rica Cubera - 2. From there we jumped into a whole bunch of excellent instructional videos by OMER that cover a lot of their gear and its proper use. These videos aren't just about OMER gear though, what you learn in them can be carried across most brands of gear. We rounded out the month with another video from Victor Abellan where he is demonstrating diving "a la espera" while taking a Dorada (Dentis) in 25m (82ft) Victor Abellan - Dorada - Spain.
