What should I buy as a beginner?

Question:

What, as a confused potential Spearfishing beginner, should I buy to get me started? Should I go for a starter kit only to find a lot of the stuff included is cheap or innapropriate and I have to change it 6 months down the line anyway, upgrade to better individual piece of equipmment? Or should I think about putting together my own ‘starter kit’ by reading reviews and choosing good, quality, practical and ‘proven’ kit that is highly recommended by experienced spearfishing people? Doing so could save me money in the long run and ensure that I and others in my situaiton, don’t give up from frustration with poor quality starter kits.
