Best type of float for 20-50lb fish and 50-100lb fish?

I have read for the biggest fish, use 3 lifeguard floats filled with 8 pound high density polyurethane closed-cell foam. What type of float and floatline is sufficient for catching a smaller 20-50lbs fish? and/or even a 50-100lbs fish?
