Freedive Training Methods

Summary:

Freedive training is based on a knowledge of the effects of apnea on the physiology of the freediver. The diver’s metabolism provides energy, by consuming oxygen O2 and produces ever increasing levels of carbon dioxide CO2 and lactate which reach toxic levels.

The object of freedive training is to condition the body to tolerate increased levels of metabolic toxins (CO2/Lactate) produced in a depleted O2 environment, while improving cardiovascular and pulmonary function…

Big Game Hunting in the Ocean

Summary:

I was reading an article recently in one of the deepsea fishing magazines where an angler was being lauded for his unwavering quest to catch all the Oceans’ Billfish and Tuna species and it got me thinking. Are there any Spearos out there with these sorts of quests in mind. You often read of flyfishers pursuing the Grand Slam of saltwater flyfishing (Bonefish/Tarpon/Permit)or the deepsea anglers trying for a Billfish Slam (Sailfish/Sworfish/Marlin). Why don’t Spearos have the same sort of thing and why are we not promoting these ideals?

In an effort to encourage the pursuit of these giants of the Ocean, I am going to put lists together, based on IGFA, to provide Spearos with a source of what species constitute these lists and hopefully, when and where to find them.

A Year at Aliwal Shoal

Summary:

The area from the NE pinnacle South toward Cathedral is the outer edge and is patrolled by record sized pelagics. This is definitely an area for the big 1.4m and custom built blue-water guns. It can only be accessed by boat. Conditions on the Shoal vary dramatically and it is therefore necessary to have an alert topman on the boat to assist the divers. I have summarized the reports to provide a succint picture of a year on the Shoal. The ideal conditions on the shoal would be a N to S current, clear water 20-30m viz and temperatures around 26 C or what is best described as Mocambique water!

Natal Combined Trials

Summary:

At the inaugural meeting of GSUC, I indicated that I would be going down to Natal to get some diving in. The words were no sooner out of my mouth before the Punisher and the Penetrator were on board! There was just no way I was going to skipper while they dived, so a quick call was made to Kassie and he agreed to be Buggy/Topman. The weather sites were watched very closely and in spite of really bad weather at the start of the week, everything seemed to indicate that the last of the SW fronts would be passed before we arrived.

My Mentorship Program

Summary:

When you get into a sport, it is because you find something exciting or challenging about it. Perhaps it is discovering new things or overcoming challenges. It is rare that you approach participation with a game-plan.

However, as you improve, you look at extending your boundaries. Whether that be competing, diving deeper or looking for particular species or sizes…

Gravlax

Summary:

Any fish is suitable but traditionally Gravlax has been made from trout and salmon. I had not been flyfishing recently and all I had was Tropical Yellowtail but I decided to give it a try anyway. Gravlax is a tradional Scandinavian way of preserving fish.

The fresh fish should be scaled. Do not do this in the kitchen of some-one you love or is important to you. You have been warned. Cut out the fillets with the skin on. You will need approx 1kg of fish fillet.
