TOW-IN SPEARFISHING

Summary:

RUNAWAY !—- I only had one hand on Greg’s new underwater scooter and it was out of control as it hauled me backwards in a tight circle so quickly that I could not get my other hand around to grab it. If I let go, it might power to the bottom in 140 feet of water and be lost. I could not see where I was going and then I heard it crash into the panga that was waiting to pick us up. It ricocheted off the panga, still dragging me backward and then powered, nose first into Michelle’s left rib cage, with a thud. As it hit her, she collapsed in the water and let the gun go. I knew immediately that with the weight and speed hitting her in such a fragile area, some ribs were probably broken…

A SPEARFISHERS SACRED MOMENT

Summary:

Time stops, and nothing else exists.  All the forces of the universe have come together in perfect order at this moment, and I am in awe, spellbound, by this precise, pure, point in time. My brain photographs this instant, click, knowing this will never exist again.  I start to swing my gun. I give thanks for this blessing, and rest in this spearfisher’s sacred moment, until a noise brings me back into the world.—- BAM—-  My shot was almost perfect, and I thought the fish was stoned, and then he roared off into the blue…

50 POUNDS AT 50 MILES AN HOUR

Summary:

The crescent tail was beating the water so forcefully and so rapidly that it was propelling the wahoo at high speed, leaving a thick jet stream trail of bubbles and foam behind…

BARF!  But if you like to shoot fish, and the confined space happens to be a small boat, and your father in law also likes to spearfish, and your “hotie” mother-in-law thinks she can shoot a bigger fish than you, then the idea becomes more interesting.

NEVER THE SAME TWICE

Summary:

It felt great to be back on our luxury live aboard again. After two months of showing Elsy the cold and craziness of LA and Las Vegas, it was wonderful to return to the natural world of the ocean.  My buddy Greg was with us on this trip to the Perlas, and for the sixty mile run, down to our first diving area, we were blessed with calm, beautiful seas…

HIPSHOT

Summary:

The next day there was no clear upper layer, so if we saw anything at all, it would be too close to extend the gun. We would have to Hip Shoot. I learned long ago in my military days, in times of lots of freedom and free ammo, that shooting from the hip is fun———but, you are probably NOT going to hit what you are aiming at. ...——BAM———- Perfect shot, broadside, just behind the eye.  She headed up and out toward deep water pulling the fish away from the rocks…
